The Desmond Tutu Chair of ‘Youth, Sport and Reconciliation’ was established as a tribute to Tutu's lifelong, non-violent commitment to create a more just society throughout the world. The University's relationship with South Africa goes back more than 125 years. With the foundation of the Desmond Tutu Programme the university hopes to provide a further impetus to scholarly and scientific cooperation between the Netherlands and South Africa.

Mosaic is a scholarship offered by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) aimed at helping representatives of ethnic minorities into the world of science. Talented graduates from ethnic minorities can apply for a subsidy of up to € 200,000 for a doctoral research post. Applicants must submit a research proposal and be prepared to defend their proposal before a selection committee. VU University Amsterdam offers Mosaic applicants coaching in these two crucial skills.
